Bio: Jennifer Kolb, LCSW; Social Work Consultant, reviewed and determined the course meets requirements for continuing education in the field of social work. This course is appropriate for masters and clinical level social workers. Jennifer graduated with a Master’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She specializes in school-based psychotherapy with children and adolescents, as well as licensing exam coaching and preparation.

Course Description: This course will provide a comprehensive guide for understanding HIV and AIDS related prevention measures, acquisition and transmission processes, treatment approaches, psychoeducation areas, and psychotherapeutic considerations.
This course meets the initial continuing education renewal requirements as specified by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for California licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed professional clinical counselors. The course content is consistent with the requirements identified in Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations (16CCR), section 1887.3 (c).
Learning Objectives:
- Define HIV and AIDS, and explain the distinction between the two.
- List three global statistics provided by WHO in 2021, state the current rates of HIV transmission, and make an accurate statement about trends in rates of transmission over the past decade.
- Identify three of the most significant risk factors for HIV/AIDS and list three ways in which HIV may be acquired.
- Identify three different medical methods for detecting and monitoring HIV/AIDS.
- Identify and explain two psychosocial considerations and cultural considerations pertaining to treatment of clients with HIV/AIDS.
- Explain three ongoing considerations that are unique to this demographic group (e.g., monitoring suicidal tendencies).
- Generate three meaningful, accurate, and client-focused clinical applications for working with clients with HIV/AIDS.
- Explain three different medical approaches for treatment of clients with HIV/AIDS.
