Course Description: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, debilitating, and costly disorder with treatments that usually produce disappointing outcomes. Progress in understanding OCD has slowed, in part, due to the heterogeneity within the disorder and that the main features of the disorder are shared with other diagnoses. To overcome this limitation, this course introduces methodological approaches to increase our understanding of OCD and presents candidate traits that might exemplify trans-diagnostic symptoms dimensions. The identification of biologically valid dimensions and reliable genetic contributions will be useful toward developing future psychiatric treatments for OCD and related disorders.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify mental health disorders that share diagnostic features of OCD
- Describe the role of goal-directed learning in validating a trans-diagnostic approach to OCD
- Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of combining trans-diagnostic and current approaches to OCD
Course Outline:
- Read and understand A trans-diagnostic perspective on obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
- Reflect on neurobiological processes observed in OCD patients that might contribute to the development of a trans-diagnostic approach to assessing and treating this disorder
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
- Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand they key methodological approaches to understanding OCD from a trans-diagnostic perspective
