Content By: Reilly, P.M., & Shopshire, M.S. Anger Management for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive–Behavioral Therapy Manual. SAMHSA Publication No. PEP19-02-01-001. Rockville, MD: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2019.

Course Description: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based practice approach for treating dually diagnosed individuals who present with substance use and mental illness. A time-limited CBT approach, implemented in a group context, is associated with positive outcomes for dually diagnosed individuals who present with co-occurring anger. The primary source for this course contains a description of a 12-week treatment model that is premised on a CBT approach. This approach combines progressive muscle relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, assertiveness training, and conflict resolution. Participants following this model are taught how to monitor their anger arousal cues and are also provided with anger management strategies that can be employed to arrest the cycle of aggression. The manual provides step-by-step instructions that can be integrated in weekly sessions.  Each session includes instructions for group leaders, check-in procedures, suggested remarks (i.e., leader scripts), and between-session homework assignments.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the 12-week cognitive-behavioral anger management group model, including targeted population, group size, and overall structure of each session
  2. Identify anger cues and key anger management strategies
  3. Explain the cycle of aggression and identify the respective characteristics of each phase
  4. Describe the A-B-C-D model of cognitive restructuring and the 5-step conflict resolution model
