Course Description:
This course adheres to the content requirements identified in Section 28 of the California Business and Professions Code (BPC) for school psychologists. Topics that are covered in this course therefore include “the study of the assessment and method of reporting of sexual assault, neglect, severe neglect, general neglect, willful cruelty or unjustifiable punishment, corporal punishment or injury, abuse in out-of- home care, physical and behavioral abuse indicators, crisis counseling techniques, community resources, rights and responsibilities of reporting, consequences of failure to report, caring for a child's needs after a report is made, sensitivity to previously abused children and adults, and implications and methods of treatment for children and adults.”
Learning Objectives:
- Define sexual assault, neglect, severe neglect, general neglect, willful cruelty, corporal punishment, and abuse in out-of-care homes
- Articulate physical and behavioral abuse indicators
- Describe three crisis counseling interventions for treating this population
- Synthesize and integrate reporting responsibilities and rights
- Verbalize considerations during the reporting process
- Identify the potential consequences of failure to report
- Articulate one way that a child’s needs can be attended to post-report
- Describe one related treatment modality for this population
