Course Description: Individuals who are diagnosed with co-occurring disorders (mental health disorders and substance use disorders) evidence a different set of challenges in comparison to offenders who do not have mental illness and/or substance abuse issues. Specifically, dually diagnosed offenders receive longer prison sentences in comparison to offenders without these diagnoses. Additionally, they report a decline in terms of mental and physical health and well-being. This course is designed to help the student understand these facts and other related behavioral health disparities that are existent for patients within the context of the criminal justice system. Additionally, the student will gain a broader understanding of the implications of such disparities pertaining to dually diagnosed offender functioning.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the impact of incarceration on dually diagnosed patients
  2. Recognize evidence-based practice modalities that are applicable for treating dually diagnosed patients
  3. Understand the way that community-based behavioral health providers approach and address criminogenic risk and need factors
  4. Examine the role of trauma in forensic patient populations and identify key principles of trauma-informed treatment approaches for dually diagnosed patients

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration: Principles of Community-based Behavioral Health Services for Justice-involved Individuals: A Research-based Guide.
  • Read and review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider challenges and risk-factors for dually diagnosed patients in both community and correctional milieus

Course Completion Requirements: All course materials are included in your AATBS student account. Attendees must read the course material and complete the accompanying test with a score of 75% or higher. Customers may retest if they score below 75%.

Evaluation: The course evaluation is also accessible in your student account. After completing the course, you will need to complete the course evaluation.

How certificate is issued: When all requirements for the course have been successfully completed, customers will be able to access and print a personal CE certificate in their student account.
