Course Description: There has been an alarming growth in the rate of non-suicidal and suicidal self-injury among youth in the United States. Accordingly, the number of evidence-based interventions for treating symptoms and behaviors have emerged in recent years. This course will review the major evidence-based interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors targeting youth populations. The researchers classify the efficacy of interventions using a five-tier system based on the strength of clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the interventions. In addition, common treatment modalities and future research and practice recommendations are presented.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare and contrast the risk factors and characteristics of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal self-injury
- List the efficacy of various psychosocial interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors using the five levels of treatment efficacy
- Summarize the efficacious treatment components identified across interventions
