Content By: Rudasill, K. M., Snyder, K. E., Levinson, H., and Adelson, J. L. (2018). Systems View of School Climate: a Theoretical Framework for Research. Educational Psychology Review, 30, 35-60. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10648-017-9401-y

Course Description: School climate has been examined theoretically and empirically without an overarching conceptual consensus. This review aims to assist in developing causal models that describe how school climate functions by proposing the Systems View of School Climate (SVSC). Researchers suggest that school climate is situated within Ecological Systems Theory (EST) to guide future research and provide utility as a theoretical framework for future causal models. For this review, the SVSC provides a roadmap by demarcating school climate from related constructs, suggesting related contextual and structural contexts, and delineating proximal and distal systems that may shape the nature of school climate.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify 3 key components of the SVSC framework and apply these components to prior models of school climate
  2. Differentiate between 5 major terms identified in EST and describe characteristics of each as it relates to school climate
  3. Define 1 term introduced in the accompanying article that is unique to the SVSC framework
  4. Examine the areas of further research suggested throughout the article

Course Outline:

  1. Review and understand Systems View of School Climate: a Theoretical Framework for Research
  2. Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  3. Consider how the SVSC framework can improve efforts to conceptualize and measure school climate as discussed in the accompanying article
  4. Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the accompanying article
  5. Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the proposed theoretical framework
