Course Description: Â The suicide rate in the United States has risen by 24% over the last two decades. Consequently, there is an existent need for practitioners to identify and understand contributory factors that lend to suicidal ideation and behavior. Individuals from leading health organizations, in addition to interpersonal theorists, have noted that demographic factors can function as significant suicide risk indicators. The accompanying meta-analysis was conducted to identify the degree of impact that demographic factors have on either mitigating, or enhancing, suicide risk.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand demographic factor identification relative to the contributory degree of risk, or risk mitigation, of such factors on suicidal ideation and behavior
- Describe the inclusion criteria required for a meta-analysis and the information/results extracted from each of the respective studies
- Summarize key findings pertaining to risk factor and protective factor analyses
- Explain the overall conclusions and implications outlined in the meta-analysis
Course Outline:
- Background and introductory information pertaining to contributory demographic factors relative to suicidal ideation, attempt, risk and risk mitigation
- Methods used in the meta-analysis; inclusion criteria, data extraction, and study quality
- Key findings; effect strength and the clinical utility of demographics as suicide risk predictors
- Results and conclusions of the meta-analysis
- Implications and recommendations for future studies
