Depression becomes more prevalent during early adulthood. Although many risk factors for depression during this time period have been identified, few studies have examined combinations of risk factors. The present study focused on risk factors for depression among first-year college students in Canada. The results of self-report surveys indicated that the absence of personal goals was most strongly associated with depressive symptoms, followed by anxiety, dysfunctional thoughts about success, and five additional risk factors. The results suggest that multimodal interventions are needed to support college students at risk of depression.
