There has been a steady increase in the incidence of mental health issues in adolescent populations. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health problems reported by adolescents and commonly co-occur. Schools are unique settings for prevention and intervention programs, but research is needed to identify person and program factors that impact the effectiveness of programs for these mental health problems. This course will introduce factors that impact program effectiveness in school settings and discuss the policy and practice implications that will lead to improved intervention success with diverse adolescent populations.

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand A systematic review and meta-analysis of school-based stress, anxiety, and depression prevention programs for adolescents
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Reflect on patient and program characteristics that influence the effectiveness of anxiety and depression prevention programs for adolescents
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand how settings and programs can be modified to increase the effectiveness of school-based mental health prevention programs
