Course Description: Cognitive abilities predict important health and well-being outcomes. The authors reviewed research on education and cognitive decline and dementia. The authors begin by reviewing adult cognitive development. The authors then review research on the connection between education and cognitive functioning in the adult population. The authors review some of the challenges in conducting research on educational achievement and aging. Origins and moderators of the link between education and adult cognitive abilities are explained. Future research may explore which aspects of education impact later cognitive decline the most, and how educational attainment influences other aspects of well-being such as health.

  2. List four factors that are predictors of cognitive ability.
  3. Identify and explain three key findings presented by the authors.
  4. Identify two challenges and statistical artifacts that can influence the results of studies on education and cognitive functioning.
  5. List two limitations of the literature review and consider how these limitations can drive future literature reviews on this topic.

  1. Read and understand Education and Cognitive Functioning Across the Life Span.
  2. Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives.
  3. Review the finding of the study with regard to the influence of educational attainment on later cognitive decline and dementia.
  4. Complete the post-test questions. Recall that answers should be based on the referenced article.
  5. Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to understand the influence educational attainment on cognitive decline and dementia.
