Although adolescent substance use has decreased in recent years it remains strongly correlated to adverse outcomes and causes of premature mortality during this life stage. A review of comparative trials between 2014 and 2017 shows that treatment selection guidelines have remained fundamentally stable and novel stand-alone approaches are showing promise as alternatives to existing evidence-based programs.   • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives.
  • Reflect on the methodology quality and effectiveness of existing outpatient treatments for adolescent substance use.
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article.
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the key factors of treatment that differentiate well-established from probably and possibly efficacious outpatient treatment programs for adolescent substance use.
