Course Description: Several systematic reviews have been conducted on animal-assisted interventions in recent years with resultant decreased patient symptomatology noted respective of mood and balance. Patients with neurological disorders may suffer from poor mobility, poor balance, isolation, and overall fatigue. Previous research studies have identified that specific equine-assisted interventions can improve balance and mobility commensurate with self-esteem improvement, self-assessed health, and fatigue reduction. The current study found that equine-assisted interventions can improve the perceived value of everyday occupations, and quality of life, and can also mitigate feelings of isolation for those with neurological disorders.  

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the literature regarding equine-assisted interventions for those with neurological disorders
  2. Explore the four main themes expressed by the researchers using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
  3. Consider the findings regarding the physical and mental health of people with neurological disorders post equine-assisted intervention implementation
  4. Understand the clinical implications and the areas needed for further research

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Equine-Assisted Intervention to Improve Perceived Value of Everyday Occupations and Quality of Life in People with Lifelong Neurological Disorders: A Prospective Controlled Study
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider equine-assisted interventions for those with neurological disorders coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand how equine-assisted interventions affect the quality of life in people with lifelong neurological disorders
