African American (AA) men suffer a disproportionate burden of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. AA men are twice as likely to have a stroke and more likely to die from heart disease than Caucasians. This study aimed to use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a framework to understand the attitudes (advantages/disadvantages), SNs (approve/disapprove), and PBC (enablers/barriers) of managing health among AA men. Overall, researchers found that health management behaviors in AA males are multifaceted. Findings from this study may be used to develop targeted interventions that improve health outcomes for AAs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the purpose of the study and the methods related to health management perceptions among African American (AA) men as examined in the article.
  2. Analyze the data by exploring the statistical tests used in conjunction with the discussed findings.
  3. Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research.
  4. Generalize the plausibility of applying both advantages and disadvantages regarding attitudes toward health management in AA men.
