HIV and AIDS: A Therapist's Reference Guide To Treatment Issues (7 CE)

Course Description: This course meets the initial continuing education renewal requirements as specified by the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for California licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed professional clinical counselors. The course content is therefore consistent with the requirements identified in Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations (16CCR), section 1887.3 (c). This course is intended to function as a comprehensive guide for understanding HIV and AIDS related prevention measures, acquisition and transmission processes, treatment approaches, psychoeducation areas, and psychotherapeutic considerations.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain what constitutes HIV/AIDS and articulate the overall course of illness
- Identify and understand one recommended HIV/AIDS prevention method
- Describe the various ways HIV may be acquired and transmitted
- Identify three different medical methods for detecting and monitoring HIV/AIDS
- Articulate three current medical treatment approaches
- Analyze when and how it may be appropriate to integrate psychoeducation into treatment
- Identify psychotherapeutic approaches that may be applicable/useful when treating individuals from this demographic group
- Explain on-going considerations that are unique to this demographic group (e.g., monitoring for suicidal tendencies)
Course Outline:
- Read and understand the HIV/AIDS course material
- Review the course description and learning objectives
- Identify HIV/AIDS prevention, transmission, and treatment options while considering the unique needs of the individual
- Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective reading material
- Return to the referenced material for any missed questions and/or to better understand recommendations for HIV/AIDS prevention, detection, transmission, monitoring, and treatment
