Course Description: International and domestic studies have indicated that an adverse relationship is existent between discrimination and health. Adults who’ve experienced discrimination resultantly endure negative mental and physical health effects that may include preclinical disease indicators.  Discrimination can ultimately impact care utilization, health behavior, and overall adherence to medication regimens. Additionally, discrimination can adversely impact the health of children and adolescents; some effects may be mitigated by psychosocial resource employment. Conclusively, racial discrimination has been identified as a risk factor for disease and is a major contributing factor for racial disparities in health. Researchers note that future studies should endeavor to close related research gaps and should further aim to explore optimal interventions that can function to ameliorate the negative health effects that are resultant from discrimination.

 

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Consider racial and ethnic differences that can lead to inequities in society and overall health
  2. Review the interrelationship, and three major pathways, between racism and inequities and the ways that these factors are mutually reinforcing
  3. Understand the statistical findings and related clinical implications for the study
  4. Review the study limitations and suggested areas for further review
