Steven Sultanoff, PhD is a psychologist, professor (Pepperdine University), professional speaker, past president of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor (AATH), and internationally recognized expert on therapeutic humor.  He has offered over 300 live continuing education and training workshops as well as creating numerous online programs on a variety of topics including clinical supervision, cognitive behavioral therapy, humor, and emotional intelligence. With over 30 years in the therapeutic humor field, he has authored many innovative articles and written a pioneering chapter on Humor in Psychotherapy. Dr. Sultanoff appears on “What’s Your Ailment!” and has previously appeared on The Morning Show, STARZ, Lifetime, and PBS. He is frequently quoted in publications such as Time (Special Edition on Anxiety), Prevention, USA Today, Forbes, Reader’s Digest, etc., and has received the AATH “Lifetime Achievement Award.”

This course is designed to introduce you to the “serious” nature of humor in the psychotherapeutic relationship.  You will learn the essence of humor as a stimulus and how it activates physical, emotional, and cognitive changes in clients. You will discover the therapeutic impact of humor, its potency as a healthful intervention, the theory and rationale for its application in psychotherapy, and how it enhances communication and strengthens the therapeutic alliance.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the universal triggers of a humorous experience
2. Understand the rationale and underpinnings for using humor in therapeutic relationships
3. Identify the three core therapeutic impacts of humor
4. Identify the multiple therapeutic benefits of humor
5. Integrate a model of therapeutic humor with a fundamental model of health and wellness intervention
6. Differentiate between the experience of humor and the experience of laughter
7. Distinguish between the physical, emotional, and cognitive benefits of humor
8. Understand how humor relieves cognitive and emotional distress
9. Understand how humor memories can be used for therapeutic purposes
10. Identify fact and fiction related to the physiological benefits of humor

Course Completion Requirements: All course materials are included in your AATBS student account. Attendees must watch the video, read the course material and complete the accompanying test with a score of 75% or higher. Customers may retest if they score below 75%.

Evaluation: The course evaluation is also accessible in your student account. After completing the course, you will need to complete the course evaluation.

How certificate is issued: When all requirements for the course have been successfully completed, customers will be able to access and print a personal CE certificate in their student account.
