Course Description: Insecure attachment has long been recognized as a clinical feature of clients with anxiety. However, existing research has commonly utilized clinical samples although far more individuals have subclinical anxiety that requires mental health care. Researchers quantified the effect of two insecure attachment representations (preoccupied and dismissing) on anxiety symptoms based on previous published research. The findings suggest that while both insecure attachment representations are associated with anxiety symptoms compared to secure attachment, they do not differ from one another in regard to their impact on anxiety. Future research should examine the mechanisms through which insecure attachment confers risk for the development of anxiety symptoms.
