Developmental social pragmatic (DSP) interventions are one treatment option for supporting the social communication and language skills of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study aimed to add a level of specificity, in identifying DSP interventions used with children with ASD. Researchers found that parents’ interaction styles significantly changed postintervention (i.e., increased responsiveness, use of affect, synchronous behavior, and decreased directiveness). Overall, DSP treatments positively impact children’s foundational communication capacities. Additional research exploring components of DSP treatments that mediate response to treatment is needed.

  3. Integrate the study limitations with the identified areas of future research.

  • Read and understand Developmental social pragmatic interventions for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review.

  • Consider the factors related to treatment options for supporting the social communication and language skills of preschool children with ASD coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article.

  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand the relationship between potential factors and mediators influencing children’s response to DSP interventions.
