Course Description:

This course discusses the emergence of telehealth in the treatment of patients with behavioral health issues.  It provides discussion concerning special considerations when using this method in treating high-risk patient populations.  The presenter will discuss standard of care issues.  The presenter will examine specific high-risk populations and risks associated.  The presenter will identify the importance of documentation including informed consent.  The presenter will discuss the importance of safety precautions and will provide a case example as a method to illustrate this.  Additionally, licensure and location will be discussed as well as general termination issues. 

Course Instructor: Kristen Lambert, JD, MSW, LICSW, CPHRM, FASHRM

Instructor Bio: Kristen Lambert, Healthcare Practice and Risk Management Innovation Officer at Trust Risk Management Services, Inc. (TRMS). She is focused on developing a wide-range of risk management content for Allied Health Professionals across the country, a program which she developed from inception. Prior to joining TRMS in 2019, she worked for a global insurance company where she led risk management for professional lines, specializing in providing services nationally for behavioral health providers, psychiatrists, and allied health professionals. She has experience as a defense attorney at a Boston law firm where she represented hospitals, nursing homes, medical providers, and allied health professionals involved in litigation, board matters, guardianship matters, and other general health law issues. In addition, she began her career as a clinical social worker in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. She has worked with all populations, specializing in treating patients in the emergency department and women and children’s services. She obtained her Juris Doctorate from the Massachusetts School of Law, Master’s of Social Work from Springfield College, and Bachelors of Arts from the University of Massachusetts. She is a member of the bars of Massachusetts and Connecticut and the District Court of Massachusetts, a Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts, and a Fellow of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management. She has published extensively including as an author contributor of the book, Integrated Care Working at the Interface of Primary Care and Behavioral Health. She routinely presents nationally and regionally on legal and risk management topics impacting providers.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the changing landscape of treatment through telehealth
  • Discuss ways to explore the importance of being aware of rules and regulations
  • Examine the importance of documentation and informed consent in telehealth
  • Discuss high-risk patient populations

Approvals:

Certificate and credits for the course will be awarded under the board approvals of the Trust and Trust Risk Management Services. TRMS website.

Managing High-Risk Patients Through Teletherapy is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Trust maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.

American Insurance Trust is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0019.

This course can also qualify for continuing education for Marriage and Family Therapists under the APA approval.
