Course Description: The opioid crisis that occurred in 2017 was resultant from an overall increase in opioid-related deaths. Increased arrest and incarceration rates for opioid-dependent individuals were also noted at that time. Consequently, treatment (tx) modalities for opioid addiction were deemed necessary in community, correctional, and post-release community settings. Additionally, incarcerated individuals with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) evidenced decreased opioid tolerance rates. Approximately 1 in 3 individuals experienced relapse post-release. Opioid relapse, concomitant with decreased tolerance rates, led to an increased risk of overdose.  Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) was/is an effective tx modality that can be employed in correctional and post-release settings. Providers who employ MAT may increase offender tx engagement, reduce criminal recidivism rates, and decrease both relapse and overdose rates.
