Course Description: For incarcerated youth, preparation and opportunities for eventual reentry and reintegration into school, community, and the workforce are complicated from the point of intake. Compared with youth in the community, higher percentages of juvenile justice (JJ) youth exhibit a mental disorder. In the current study, survey questions were completed on the following topics: staff training, participation in professional development (PD), training format and frequency of PD, attributes of PD, methods of evaluating PD, and the adequacy of PD. Researchers found that PD was typically provided once per year, per topic and face to face, rather than online. Further research implicates the need to ensure that JJ staff have the necessary mental health and related PD to promote the safety, well-being, rehabilitation, and education of youth.
