Course Description: Experiencing or witnessing traumatic events can lead to the manifestation of mental health problems. Trauma survivors are less likely to use mental health services (MHS). The identification of relevant MHS use facilitators and barriers can improve utilization and long-term mental health outcomes for adult trauma survivors. Treatment facilitators and barriers can be categorized into predisposing, enabling, and need factors, as identified via an analysis of existing research. Prominent barriers for MHS utilization by adult trauma survivors included a lack of knowledge, treatment-related doubts, fear of negative social consequences, limited resources, time, and expenses. Prominent facilitators were not as commonly researched and will require future empirical consideration.

  1. Describe the types of traumatic experiences that can lead to psychopathology and may necessitate mental health service (MHS) utilization
