Course Description: Social psychology began as a result of a positive philosophy combined with an attempt to quantify natural science. The goal of the 1960’s social psychologist was to move away from the humanistic and action-oriented social science. Social representations theory emerged in response to this shift and offered a theoretical and analytical framework that eschewed the positive approach underlying social psychology. The theory of neoliberalism further impacted the related development of anti-positivist social representations theory and transformed academia’s focus from individualism to a business model. The researchers posit three different conclusions relative to the effects of neoliberalism on social psychology from political and cultural contexts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Distinguish the differences between neoliberalism and social representations theory (SRT)
  2. Describe how neoliberalism has transformed the role of academia
  3. Evaluate the effects of neoliberalism on social psychology
