Course Description: Traumatic events have significant effects on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals who experience them.  These experiences have been classified as peritraumatic reactions.  Peri-traumatic reactions occupy a central role in the study of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) psychopathology.  The current study interviews individuals with prior traumatic event experience to evaluate the peritraumatic characteristics, such as dissociation, distress, mental defeat, and immobility.  Researchers also offer explanations about reactions that have been understudied.  The results offer insight into the social nature of traumatic experiencers as well as plausible trauma-focused psychological interventions. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify 1 central aim of the study and explain the methods related to peritraumatic reactions following disastrous events.
2. Identify 4 key findings of the study presented by the authors in the discussion and consider the implications of these findings in the broader context of mental health research and practice.
3. Identify 2 limitations of the study and consider these limitations in the context of future research in this area.

• Return to the referenced article to better understand the relationship between psychopathology development and traumatic experiences
