Course Description: A significant proportion of individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) report a history of trauma, such as physical or sexual assault. Identifying efficacious treatments that can be implemented in SUD treatment centers can potentially reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and SUD simultaneously. This course reviews the findings of a clinical study on the implementation of psychodrama therapy in SUD treatment centers. The researchers describe the theoretical and clinical impact of the findings as well as elements of psychodrama therapy that contribute to its efficacy, safety, and tolerability among patients involved in inpatient SUD treatment. Although the US healthcare system has been slow to adopt psychodrama as an evidence-based intervention, the results of this study show its promise in reducing PTSD symptoms while maintaining high patient satisfaction.
