Course Description: Publication bias is a problem for the credibility of research in general, and in particular when using meta-analyses, as it yields overestimated effects and a possible non-existence of effects. Publication bias is acknowledged among researchers, but the strength of its influence is less well-known. An examination of statistical findings using a large-scale data set was included in the study. Various conclusions were formed across subsets (homogenous and heterogenous). Overall, publication bias, in its most extreme case, suggested weak support in both psychology and medicine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the concept of meta-analysis and how it relates to publication bias
  2. Consider publication bias, correction methods used, and the resultant relationship to overestimation effects
  3. Understand the statistical findings and overall analysis of the study
  4. Review the conclusions and further applications pertaining to the overall findings of this study

Course Outline:

  1. Read and Understand Publication bias examined in meta-analyses from psychology and medicine: A meta-meta-analysis
  2. Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  3. Consider the concept of publication bias concomitant with the statistical results in the accompanying article
  4. Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that the answers should come from the article provided
  5. Return to the article for any missed questions to help understand meta-analysis, publication bias, and/or the overestimated effects described
