Risk factors and features of suicidality in youth are different than those found in adults, hence the need to determine potential risk factors as well as develop decision-support tools to identify younger people at greater risk. Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the current purpose and methods of the current study
  • Identify at least 4 risk factors associated with self-harm and suicidality among youth
  • Integrate the 3 study limitations with the identified areas of future research

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Risk of Suicide and Self-harm in Kids: The Development of an Algorithm to Identify High-Risk Individuals Within the Children’s Mental Health System
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider the factors related to self-harm in youth coupled with the statistical findings from the accompanying article
  • Work through the post-test questions; keep in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to better understand how the RiSsk algorithm was developed, the strengths and weaknesses of the study, and how the algorithm might be used to improve the assessment of suicidality among youth
