Course Description: Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder are associated with increased mortality risk as well as increased physical morbidity.  Antipsychotic medications are typically used in this patient population but have not shown any noticeable decrease in mortality/morbidity.  Due to the difficulty of assessing clinical presentations of the disease, patterns of readmission have been a good indicator of functioning.  The present study investigates whether clozapine, an antipsychotic medication, decreases risk of readmission following discharge of an inpatient episode.  The results show that clozapine may have a protective effect on schizophrenia patients as compared to other antipsychotic medications.
