Content By: Ribeiro, J. D., Harris, L. M., Linthicum, K. P., & Bryen, C. P. (2020). Do suicidal behaviors increase the capability for suicide? A longitudinal pretest-posttest study of more than 1,000 high-risk individuals. Clinical Psychological Science, 8, 890-904. DOI: 10.1177/2167702620921511

Course Description: Capability for suicide is a key construct in theory and research on suicide, yet most work on capability for suicide has not examined capability for suicide over time. Data were collected from over 1000 adults who were members of online forums for suicide, self-injury, and mental health support with follow-up data collection at 28 days after baseline. Engaging in self-cutting or aborted, interrupted, or nonfatal suicide attempts did not mediate changes in capacity for suicide. Future research may investigate the contribution of genetics to capability for suicide.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define capability for suicide
  2. Identify the three primary weaknesses of prior studies on this topic
  3. Evaluate the results of the present study with regard to whether engaging in suicidal behavior mediates changes in capability for suicide

Course Outline:

  • Read and understand Do suicidal behaviors increase the capability for suicide? A longitudinal pretest-posttest study of more than 1,000 high-risk individuals.
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives.
  • Review the findings of the study with regard to whether suicidal behaviors increase capability for suicide.
  • Complete the post-test questions. Recall that answers should be based on the referenced article.
  • Return to the referenced article for any missed questions and/or to understand the influence of suicidal behaviors on capability for suicide.
