Course Description: Antisocial personality disorder, psychopathy, and sociopathy share several features but have divergent causes. In particular, patients exhibiting a violent personality are more likely to exhibit traits of psychopathy or sociopathy. Understanding the underlying neurophysiological and environmental causes of these conditions is needed in order to properly intervene with patients exhibiting violent traits. It is estimated that 3-15% of persons with antisocial personality disorder exhibit psychopathic or sociopathic traits. Future work with violent offenders requires refining definitions of treatment, improving definitions and assessments and continuing to explore traits that distinguish sociopathy and psychopathy.
