Course Description: It is well documented that incarceration can have a negative impact on mental health functioning. Less is known about the impact of other forms of criminal justice contact. Empirical data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 were analyzed to assess the impact of arrest, conviction and incarceration on mental health. Resultant statistical analyses revealed that arrest was negatively associated with mental health. Similarities in associations across race and ethnicity combined with disparities in contact suggest that criminal justice contact exacerbates minority health inequalities. The results indicate that the mental health consequences of criminal justice contact are greater than previously thought.

Learning Objectives:
