Course Description: The divorce process is distressing for parents and children. A high-quality co-parenting relationship after divorce is important for children’s healthy development, and the well-being of all family members. Specifically, complex divorces are characterized by ongoing hostile exchanges between ex-partners. This study examined whether regular divorces can be distinguished from complex divorces by measuring the intensity of negative emotions that divorced parents report when thinking about their ex-partner. Researchers found that parents in a complex divorce reported more co-parenting concerns than parents in a regular divorce. Overall, professionals working with divorced couples, mediators, and therapists need awareness of the role emotional distancing plays.
