Research studies have identified that individuals with common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are at increased risk for negative consequences following trauma exposure. There has been considerably less attention on the impact of childhood trauma among those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Considering the heterogenous nature of ASD on social, language, and behavioral skills more work is needed to improve screening, diagnosis, and treatment of trauma in this population. The researchers discuss how gold standard treatments for trauma, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) can be adapted to meet the needs of ASD youth. In addition to addressing the core symptoms of ASD, clinicians must also be mindful of associated characteristics that can alter the therapy process.
