Course Description: Adolescents who engage in underage drinking, particularly binge-drinking, evidence a greater tendency to drink and drive, partake in risky sexual behavior, and engage in self-injurious behavior in comparison to their alcohol-abstinent peers. Members of Congress enacted the Sober Truth on Preventing (STOP) Underage Drinking Act to mitigate the negative consequences associated with underage drinking. The STOP Act provides direction to members of The Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD), in conjunction with Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) employees, pertaining to state-specific measurement guideline development intended to decrease the rate of underage drinking. This course serves to examine related regulatory guidelines concerning minors’ use and availability of alcohol. Special emphasis is placed on prevention efforts designed to target underage binge-drinking.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the comprehensive approach to prevention as outlined in the Institute of Medicine (IOM)’s Continuum of Care model
  2. Understand the concept and components of prevention implementation
  3. Identify laws that address underage alcohol purchases, possession and use
  4. Understand best-practice guidelines and evidence-based practices pertaining to drinking and driving, alcohol possession, and related purchases
  5. Understand the way that compliance checks impact alcohol availability for underage individuals
  6. Describe the interaction and intersection between law enforcement and alcohol-related policy implementation, programs and laws
  7. Understand the implementation of related policies, programs, and laws
  8. Summarize data respective of states’ performance measures in identified areas from 2006-2017

Course Outline:  

  • Read and understand State Performance and Best Practices for the Prevention and Reduction of Underage Drinking.
  • Review the Course Description and Learning Objectives
  • Consider the laws and policies that are considered best practice approaches for underage alcohol consumption, prevention, and reduction
  • Work through the post-test questions; bear in mind that answer selections should be derived from the respective article/source
  • Return to the referenced article/source for any missed questions and/or to review best practice approaches, policies, and performance measures

Course Completion Requirements: All course materials are included in your AATBS student account. Attendees must read the course material and complete the accompanying test with a score of 75% or higher. Customers may retest if they score below 75%.

Evaluation: The course evaluation is also accessible in your student account. After completing the course, you will need to complete the course evaluation.

How certificate is issued: When all requirements for the course have been successfully completed, customers will be able to access and print a personal CE certificate in their student account.
