EPPP Part 2 Study Resource: Ethical Practice
EPPP Part 2 Study Resource: Ethical Practice
January 19, 2023First announced in 2017, the ASPPB confirmed that they’d be developing a new version of the EPPP to provide an exam that more accurately reflected the realities of being a practicing psychologist in today’s modern world. Starting in 2020, several states and provinces adopted the new exam format, requiring psychologists who plan to become licensed in those states to pass the new exam version. This new format includes two separate exams: EPPP Part 1 - Knowledge and EPPP Part 2 - Skills. Along with a knowledge-based exam similar to the current EPPP exam, the EPPP Part 2 will test the functional skills psychologists need in several areas of competency.
In a series of blog posts, we’ve been looking at what these new areas of competency are and what types of information will be included within each domain on the exam. Today, we’re exploring the EPPP Part 2 domain Ethical Practice. The Ethical Practice domain accounts for 17% of the EPPP Part 2 and this portion of the exam will test your ability to functionally apply the ethics of the profession in your professional practice. You’ll need to show you can apply the laws, guidelines, and ethical codes as a psychologist.
The Ethical Practice competency has three parts:
The first part will look at your ability to uphold professional behavior and standards in your work. This includes psychology ethics and regulations. You’ll need to show you can apply and communicate ethical standards in professional interactions. Additionally, the exam will look at your ability to discuss concerns with professional peers’ ethics, seek out consultation as needed, and demonstrate professional ethics in your practice.
Part 2 of the Ethical Practice competency will require you to show you can document and represent your professional work accurately. You’ll need to show you can create proper and thorough records of your professional activities including billing. In the domain of research, you’ll need to show you can read and summarize research accurately without bias as well as credit any professional collaborators.
The final part of the Ethical Practice competency examines ethical decision making. You’ll be required to demonstrate that you can create and continue to use a consistent process for ethical decision making. Your system should identify common legal or ethical issues in psychology practice as well as a method for addressing issues of ethics and that you’ll consult other professionals as necessary.
